Decisive Third-Quarter Surge Powers Uganda to Winning Start at the Hydro
Glasgow, Scotland – Uganda’s She Cranes got their 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign off to a winning start, overcoming Wales 59-50 at the OVO Hydro on Saturday, with a dominant third-quarter turnaround proving the difference in a tightly fought Pool B opener.
Wales had actually led 31-28 at the break after a competitive opening half, but Uganda flipped the contest on its head after the restart, outscoring their opponents 17-8 in the third quarter to seize control of the match. Crucially, the She Cranes didn’t relinquish that advantage in the final period, closing out the nine-goal victory to open their campaign with maximum points.
The result continues Uganda’s strong recent record against Wales and reflects the gap between the two sides in the current world rankings, with the sixth-ranked She Cranes sitting one place above their Welsh opponents heading into the tournament.
Shadiah Nassanga led the way for Uganda in attack with 27 goals, well supported by Mary Cholhok’s 23-goal contribution, as the shooting circle capitalized on the momentum built during that pivotal third quarter. For Wales, Georgia Rowe was the standout performer, finishing as the match’s top scorer with 30 goals despite the defeat.
Wales suffered a further blow late in the match when centre Vicky Booth went off in the final quarter with what appeared to be an ankle injury, adding to the disappointment of a missed opportunity in a game they had led at halftime.
Wales captain Bethan Dykes pointed squarely to the third-quarter collapse as the turning point, acknowledging her side gave away too much possession during that period and admitting Uganda adapted faster than Wales could respond. She noted that defensively her side had performed well throughout, but a lack of clinical finishing in attack during the crucial third quarter ultimately cost them.
The win offers a timely confidence boost for Uganda given their underwhelming build-up to the Games, which included a 3-0 series defeat to South Africa’s Spar Proteas earlier this year. Getting the campaign started with two points eases some of the pressure heading into a demanding run of remaining fixtures against Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, New Zealand, and hosts Scotland.
Wales, meanwhile, have no time to dwell on the disappointment, facing hosts Scotland next on Sunday at 09:00 BST in a match they will need to win to keep their own campaign on track.
