Return of Super League Draws She Cranes Stars Back to Local Clubs

Kampala – The resumption of the Uganda Netball Super League has seen several Ugandan players return home after seeking playing opportunities abroad during the league’s two-year suspension.

The absence of domestic competition had limited regular high-level match exposure, prompting some players to feature in leagues outside the country. With the Super League back on the calendar, many have opted to rejoin local clubs, boosting the quality and competitiveness of the revived competition.

The returnees join a number of She Cranes national team players spread across various clubs, significantly raising the league’s standard. Their presence is expected to benefit younger players, who now have the opportunity to train and compete alongside experienced international athletes.

The Super League launch at Nakivubo, however, also highlighted ongoing infrastructure challenges facing the sport. Heavy rainfall disrupted proceedings, underscoring the need for covered and modern netball facilities to support consistent competition.

Addressing the issue, National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel said plans were underway to improve infrastructure for netball and other indoor sports.

“Netball deserves better facilities, and we are committed to providing them,” Dr Ogwel said, citing the ongoing construction of the Hoima Indoor Stadium, which will include dedicated netball courts.

He added that the Hoima facility would offer a long-term solution to weather-related disruptions and enhance the country’s capacity to host major competitions.

Discussions are also ongoing to upgrade existing courts in Kampala and other regions as part of broader efforts to support the sport’s growth.

Netball Uganda officials believe improved infrastructure, combined with the return of experienced players and ongoing administrative reforms, will strengthen the domestic game and provide a solid foundation for future She Cranes success on the continental stage.
